Kananaskis Trip Report: March. 15 2010

Well, two weeks have totally changed the game in K-Country for backcountry users. While many were pushing into steep, exposed terrain during the long dry spell we had through February, we've now returned to an extremely volatile snowpack.

Case and point - when I was out with four other skiers on Sunday, we found ourselves staring a size three slide in the face. Its speed in the alpine was enough to carry through the trees that we were skinning through and seriously shake us up, partially burying one of our group. This slide stormed through an established skin track route that I've used many times before. It certainly spooked us and has kept me humbled in the days after my first up close experience with a slide.

Buried surface hoar, wind slab and warm sunny weather have set a dangerous trap for backcountry users in Kananaskis right now. K-Country forecasters are advising skiers to stick to low-angle, low-elevation, tree'd terrain but personally, I'll be kicking the soccer ball around in 19 degree Calgary until conditions settle down.

any green light report like this should be balanced with a scary TR like this one: http://www.biglines.com/forum/near-hit-sickle-mt-victoria

Yeah it's pretty crazy that the Rockies have had the best stability around!!! I've skied some nice lines on the Icefield parkway, 3 different couloirs on Mt Patterson were quite rewarding in particular :)
Skied lots of terrain in the Lake Louise backcountry that have always made me nervous as well.
The problem is when we do get some snow and strong wind it's going to all go to shit for a while... so many bad layers out there.... sun crusts, surface hoar, big time faceting. PLAY SAFE OUT THERE

In regards to stability as of late we have been getting alot of small releases remotely on north aspect stuff off of ridge tops around the parkway. Lot of large spooky settlements up there also. They (slabs) have been small to this point, but some have been triggered remotely ect ect. and have been running fast on the hoar. Definately not the same green light conditions it was a couple weeks ago.

Way to take advantage of the good conditions. Hard to believe how much stuff is getting hit.
