A couple days at RMR w Video
Submitted by Matt Westcott on Wed, 2008-12-24 08:00
We were a day away from our intended departure for Revelstoke and getting stoked to leave when I got an email from the Ride Guide asking if I wanted to shoot some video at Sol Mountain Touring. I had never heard of Sol, but was stoked on doing the shoot. As luck would have it the skiers still hadn't been confirmed for the shoot and before I knew it the lads who were going to go to revy for a couple of days were now on their way to a sweet backcountry lodge for 5 days of touring! On board for the trip were Mark Butcher, Thommy Westcott and Joel Whalen. After re-working a few schedules and packing the van we were on our way to the promised land. Another season of good times with good friends underway. After a long drive and handful of road pops, a restful night on my friend Eric's couches was just what we needed. Eric had become a resident of Revelstoke only the week before and was pumped on his recent move from Vancouver. We woke the next morning to the smell of coffee, oatmeal and snow falling outside the trailer. No way! it was actually snowing in BC! Before we knew it we were ascending on the Gondola and heading for the goods. We found plenty of it off the top of the Stoke chair in all directions. We ended up lapping it up in North Bowl, which at the time I believe was still out of bounds but soon to be open game. It was epically cold, and a touch windy, but that only made for better riding below tree line with pockets of blower pow all over the place. Our first day of shredding was just about as good a first day I've ever had and we decided we'd come up the next morning to shoot some video. We ended up crashing at Alpine Lodge, a nice little motel with chill owners and a beer friendly hot tub. The next day there was even more fresh with the wind doing it's part to smooth things over. It was a little chilly at -20c something, but it was to much fun to pass up. We were straight back into North Bowl eating up its endlessly varied terrain. It's a mouth-watering zone that will only get better with time and a deeper snowpack. After a good day of shooting it was time to change gears and focus on touring. We were heading out to Sol Mountain the next morning, but before we left we had a date with angus at Valhalla Pure. They were going to help get Mark and Joel set up with some light weight touring gear for our trip. Angus and Co. sorted us out and got the guys what they needed to take their slackcountry to the real backcountry. The next morning we flew out of revy and into one of the nicest sunrises I've ever seen on our way to Sol Mountain Touring lodge . We arrived at Sol with massive grins from ear to ear. Again it was freezing, but that was old news by that point. It was bluebird, we had just flown in over some truly epic mountains and there was a ton of snow and it was all ours. Doesn't get any better. Sol Mountain is a newer ski touring operation perched up in the Monashees about 20 mins by heli south of Revelstoke. I recommend checking them out if your into the sick touring trips. The lodge is super cozy and gives you access to a tenure 3 times larger than Whistler. Sol offers catered trips, or rents out its facilities to you and 15 friends. Once your there, its basically endless backcountry terrain right at your fingertips and super cozy digs with all the amenities to come back too, including a sweet Finnish sauna to slow roast in after a long day on the hides Our five days at Sol consisted of long skin tracks, beautiful scenery and always epic pow to finish off. You'll be able to catch all of the action from Sol Mountain Lodge on the Ride Guide sometime in the near future. In the mean time check out a few of the pics. Don't forget to check out the short video from a day at RMR. In case your wondering. The music in the video is by bloom - check out myspace.com/edwardbeckley to hear some more. You can look forward to more music from Bloom in Dubs Brothers Films 08/09 release titled "The Beat Goes On" Special Thanks to Ashley Tait at RMR Angus and Co. at Valhalla Pure and of course Eric for the couches! |
